Learn how computational designers can leverage BIM project data to generate spatial design insights and create automated tools using machine learning by visiting the School of Built Environment GradEx 24 exhibition at White Bay Power Station, Rozelle, Sydney from 28.11 - 30.11

Computational Design final year student Zhang Wang’s graduation project trained a machine learning Graph Neural Network (GNN) model to automatically generate hospital floor plan layout diagrams. The project used the Revit plugin Dynamo to extract spatial data and convert it to JSON format. It cleaned the training data using Python Pandas library to convert spatial functions and interrelationships into a graph structure. @be_gradex24 @unswada @unswbe

Computational Design final year student Hareem Nadeem's grad research project investigates how facial recognition systems can be used for emotion classification to enhance a robot’s capacity to both recognise and reciprocate emotions during Human-Robot-Interaction. The project workflow uses Facial Action Coding System (FACS), Python3 libraries, FACEOSC, and Wekinator.

BioShelter 2.0 is a marine habitat designed and fabricated for Blackwattle Bay, Sydney by the ARC centre for Next-Gen Architectural Manufacturing (arch_manu), @unswcode staff and graduates, and the UNSW @design_futures_lab

More than 50% of the natural shoreline at Blackwattle Bay, Sydney has been replaced by vertical, flat, and smooth concrete seawalls which are unsuitable habitats for marine life. Consequently, marine biodiversity has reduced, including lowering the numbers of ecologically significant marine species such as oysters which play an important role in filtering water to help maintain its quality. To attract and rehouse diverse marine life, the BioShelter 2.0 design process has leveraged marine biology data, computational design methods, and robotic fabrication to create site-specific artificial habitats.

BioShelter 2.0 has been fabricated using non-planar 3D printing to create complex moulds to cast its form in concrete. The shape, textures and patterns are designed to promote the growth of oysters, barnacles and algae while also protecting juvenile fish from predators. The moulds have been printed in recycled plastic so they can be removed, shredded, washed and downcycled for reuse and to reduce production waste.

The BioShelter 2.0 project will be exhibited at the UNSW Urban Futures Expo on Thursday 21st November 3:30pm-6:30pm at UNSW Paddington Campus - for details see link in bio.

Calling all Adelaideans ! Please join us in your fine city, for the opening of our latest exhibition on the work of Japanese architect Shoei Yoh.

“Light Matter(s): Interiors by Shoei Yoh” will open at @unisasasagallery at 1pm next Saturday 6th July. This exhibition draws from the archive to showcase for the first time in Australia a selection of Yoh’s early interior architecture projects and his exploration of light.
